Frequently asked questions.
What is a Domain Name?
The address or URL (Universal Resource Locator) of a particular Web site, it is
the text name corresponding to the numeric IP address of a computer on the Internet.
Example: http://www.CameronWebServices.ca
is the URL and CameronWebServices.ca is the domain name which is an alias for the
IP address of where (on the internet) the web site is located.
Your domain name is very valuable as it is part of your branding. Many names have
already been registered to other companies. Some companies will buy up domain names
in the hope that they will be able to sell them later for a profit. Other companies
will wait until a poor unsuspecting owner has forgotten to renew their annual subscription
and they will buy it up and sell it back to the owner for scalpers rates. While
the original owner is unaware or undecided about the state of his/her registration
the scalpers will redirect his/her domain name to an advertising site where they
can make even more profits.
There are many domain name suffixes, including; .com, .net, .org, .edu, .mil, .gov,
.biz, .arts, .info, .name, .store, .web, .tv, .ca
What is hosting?
Web hosting is a service that allows users to store web pages on a server that is
always (24/7) connected to the Internet. A web hosting company, or hosting service
provider (HSP), is a business that has access to the technologies and services needed
for websites to be viewed by others over the internet.
Web hosting packages come with many different features. You will need to match your
website needs depending upon the size, market and complexity to the features offered
by your hosting provider. Like Applesoft and Windows there are also two main brands
of hosting, Unix and Windows. It is rare to find both developers and hosting environments
which support both environments.
In the Unix world you will hear terms such as PHP, Pearl, Apache, and MySQL. In
the windows world you will hear terms such as ASP, IIS, Visual Studio, and SQL Server.
Both environments have their following and their fans will argue that theirs is
the best. Depending upon your application and your budget, you and your developer
will have to decide which world you would like to be hosted.
What is Bandwidth?
The amount of data that can be transmitted at any given moment to and from a server.
The higher the bandwidth, the larger the amount of traffic the site can handle at
one time. More bandwidth is always better as the site will be faster and handles
more traffic. If your website is slow or stopped it may have a great deal to do
with bandwidth.
What is a basic website package-standard web page?
The standard web page consists of from 1 to 3 images/pictures. Up to 500 words of
text, links, bullet points, laid out in a pleasing and readable manor.
What is SEO?
Search engine optimization is where the website is designed or changed to improve
popularity with the search engine. A well optimized webpage based upon targed keywords
will rank well and possibly within the top few pages of the search list.
Why is my page not on the top of the search list in google?
This can occur due to several reasons:
- The website may not be search engine optimized (SEO)
- The website may be new and not indexed at this time.
- There could be strong compitition for the targeted keywords.
- Most likely due to a lack of quality links from other sites to the website.
